January 24th—I’m back, baby! It’s been a while, but it’s a new year, new beginnings! This picture was taken by photographer Joan Dooley when I was standing in front of the lecture screen at Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles last November 8th, where I had just finished presenting my new VisuaLecture to Michael Dooley’s (Joan’s hubby) Design History class, “Illustration & Comic Art”! Joan yelled “Freeze!” and thus a new profile pic was born: a “Living Lichtenstein” it was dubbed! For more on the lecture: http://www.workbook.com/blog/tag/arlen-schumer-visualecture#page=1
Off to LA for my 2 lectures, THE GRAPHIC DESIGN OF COMIC BOOK ART for AIGA-LA (http://aigalosangeles.org/events/comments/the_graphic_design_of_comic_book_art1), and ILLUSTRATION & COMIC ART for Michael Dooley’s Art Center College of Design (http://teachevil.com/2012/10/30/illustration-comics/)! Hope to see my LA-area peeps there!
DOUBLE DOSE OF KIRBY @ NYCC! I’ll be signing and selling copies of my 16-pg verbal/visual essay, “The Auteur Theory of Comics,” and my NEW “Jack Kirby Silver Edition” (a 32-pg standalone reprinting of the JK chapter from my book, The Silver Age of Comic Book Art), both to benefit the JK Museum, at my booth, #2376 in the small press area on the main floor (right next to the JK Museum booth)! HANK WEISINGER—SON OF MORT—AT NYCC! Here’s a great chance to meet the man who, as a boy, acted as a one-man focus group for his father’s Silver Age Superman ideas that infected (pun intended) us all! Hank’ll be at my booth SATURDAY ONLY (
The very first words spoken on the very first episode of the greatest TV series of all time, Rod Serling’s The Twilight Zone, the Father of American Pop Culture, on October 2, 1959, not only introduced the concept of the series, but ushered America into the 1960s: “The Place is here..the time is now…and the journey into the shadows that we’re about to watch could be our journey…” Indeed.
A self-portrait for John Jennings’ BlacKirby exhibition catalog (where my Black Panther 4-pg feature & OBLAC—aka Marcus Garvey—portrait will appear). And a tip o’ the amulet to Steve Damm for first dubbing me “The Silver Age Sensei”!
